What is Independent Support?

Independent Supporters provide advice and support through the statutory assessment and Education & Health Care Plan (EHC Plan) processes to Young People with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), and the parents of children with SEND.

The Independent Supporters working with Essex families have been recruited and are managed by the iSEssex partnership. This service is independent from the local authority.

The level and nature of the support will be tailored to the particular needs of individual families. Independent Supporters offer a range of time-limited support such as liaison across different agencies.

iSEssex will provide Independent Supporters in Essex to work directly with young people and the parents of children being assessed for a EHC Plan.

This service is in addition to the services provided by Essex County Council.

How can iSEssex help us?
Why have independent supporters been introduced?

The Children and Families Act 2014 has introduced new laws for children and young people who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). From september 1, 2014, local authorities have a duty to replace statements of Special Educational Needs (SEN) with a new Educational, Health and Care (EHC) plan.

To support this change, government are funding an Independent Support service to assist families through the new SEND assessment and planning process.

Independent Support Providers (including iSEssex) are contracted through the programme which is managed and monitored by the Council for Disabled Children (CDC).
